Aside from intermittent fasting, one of the biggest trends in food and nutrition in 2020 is Plant Forward. This means emphasizing on and celebrating eating mostly, but not exclusively, plants—vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, pulses, nuts, seeds, plant-based fats, herbs and spices. Not only does research support eating mostly plant foods for health and athletic performance, it is also more sustainable and environmentally friendly.
Eating plant forward and adding in poultry, fish, dairy, and modest amounts of meat is considered flexitarian. All eating patterns that are plant forward (flexitarian, vegetarian, vegan) can support a CrossFit athlete whether the goal is health and fitness or competition. An example of a plant forward, flexitarian eating plan for a day is available here and some additional ideas in an article in the NY Times about flexitarian eating.
To me the label of ‘plant forward’ is a good one because of its message of moving forward, which has been said in this blog many times…progress, not perfection! So, here is to 2020 with a focus on eating more plants!
Happy and healthful eating,
