BIG Nutrition: Thankful for holiday foods!

As you may know, my blog comes out weekly on Thursdays, so each year I create a blog for Thanksgiving. It is one of my favorite holidays because there is a chance to reflect, be grateful, and enjoy a bunch of food!

I could write this blog about how to save calories or alter recipes so that they are more healthful. But this year I wanted to focus on why we eat the food we eat at holidays. The foods we choose on a daily basis are influenced by taste, appearance, habits, our food environment, cultural and social factors, health, economics, and other factors. Holiday food, though, is heavily driven by our culture, our habits, and the food that is familiar to us and our loved ones. Because of this, I don’t believe in changing holiday foods. Having a few meals per year that are anchored by familiar and comforting foods is important. I am hopeful that everyone at BIG relishes this day and the special foods that make our holidays enjoyable!
