Sometimes you meet a person and you just know! That’s the case with Kina, I met her and thought “wow, what a wonderful young lady; I would love to have a coach like her on the team.” And then it happened! Kina joined the Iron & Grit team in June and has been shadowing Coach Miguel and Coach Brian for the month. She will be your Head Coach on Tuesday mornings for the summer.
Coach Kina will also be developing a Wellness Program with our dietician Donna Pertel. The program is a more comprehensive Beginners Program and will add to the support we provide to our newest athletes. Look for details later this summer.
Below are the answers to a few questions you may have for Coach Kina:
Favorite Lift: It changes every once in a while, actually! Haha! It used to be the deadlift but right now I’d say it’s the snatch.
Favorite Benchmark WOD: MURPH
Life changing experience, if any: Getting into fitness was a life changing experience for me. At first I did it to lose weight then I realized how good it made me feel. It’s like a medicine. I need it regularly to stay healthy mentally and physically. Ultimately, I love the discipline of CrossFit and enjoy all kinds of fitness.
Why Iron & Grit? What did you like about us? The elite coaching, the layout and the awesome members!! Everyone is so genuinely friendly!
Beginners Program–can you give us some insight about how you envision the program? My vision for the beginners program is a program that would help prepare someone for success with CrossFit. Not only will they get the instruction of the movements but they’re going to get nutritional support so they can fuel their bodies appropriately and get the recovery they need to succeed. It’s also designed for small groups so new members can make friends before joining the community.
Where did you grow up? I grew up in Queens, NY and also upstate NY in Dutchess County. I moved to a small town in Missouri when I was 15. Got a scholarship to college so I stayed close to home then moved to St. Louis after that. I moved to the Boston area in 2012 for a marketing job with Coca Cola.
Any super hero real life people who inspire you? Wonder Woman! Because I’m all about strong independent women!!
What do you envision for your future as an athlete, as a coach? I can only hope to get better at my craft and help make better athletes. I hope to make strides in my own training as well. Better, faster, stronger.
