When excitement isn’t enough

Lately I seem to be having a similar conversation with many Iron & Grit athletes. Most are new to CrossFit and have just graduated from our beginners program but others are seasoned veterans. The theme of each conversation is roughly the same, “Coach, motivation is hard” or worse yet, “Coach, why am I doing this?” These questions are pretty normal, but if not addressed, can hinder progress. Here are three key points to keep the new athlete on the path to success:




When excitement isn’t enough…

Excitement initially brings new members to train everyday. I remember my own experience and I showed up everyday for about two weeks. I tackled whatever WOD was put in front of me. I got a heavy sweat going and I was feeling great. After 3 months, my excitement began to wane. Getting up to go WOD started to feel like a chore and I remember driving all the way to the box, sitting in my car parked in the lot, only to drive back home because I was too sore. I knew I needed to change some bad habits and I was determined to make change happen for myself. What I failed to understand was that change happens over a 6 week period and 2 weeks of heavy, intensive training was only burning me out physically and mentally. I needed to find balance to my training and once I found a schedule that worked with my job, family and children’s schedule I started to see success. Creating a routine, allowed me to ingrain the most important aspect of health and fitness; the habit of regular training.


What do you want?

There must have been a reason why you decided to join a box. I remember mine, I was tired of the old me. Imagine a short tempered, skinny-fat restaurant manager who smoked too many cigarettes and only drank coffee or beer. I was tired, frustrated and needed change. Having a goal set allowed me to focus my efforts each WOD and not long after, the change I was after started to happen. Think about why you started; if it’s powerful enough to get you to invest in the Beginner’s Program then let us help you link it to your overall goals of making your desire for change into daily habits.


One is the loneliest number…

One of the best parts about CrossFit is its community. It is the most inclusive and supportive group of people I have ever met. I will always remember my very first WOD, specifically how tough it was. It was 3 rounds of a hill run, wall balls, pull ups and I wanted to quit. In round 2 at the top of the hill, I leaned against a post and thought to myself, “yup, I’m done.” But the other participants wouldn’t have it. They waited until I was ready and ran with me (they were done with the WOD at this point). That day I knew that these folks were amazing people and I still workout with them today. Each member of a CrossFit community is driven to become better, healthier and fitter. The ones that stick it out, understand that goals are necessary, consistency is key and training partners offer a different kind of motivation!


Although these key points are directed towards new members, it doesn’t mean that seasoned athletes can’t benefit from setting goals and finding new inspiration. I have been using these keys for the majority of my time in fitness and now as a Head Coach at Iron & Grit. I still have moments where the soreness wins, or I need to reevaluate my goals.  But I know that I can depend on this community of athletes to motivate me. My training partner’s will always be there, calling me to get to class despite my soreness, challenging me to chase my goals and just in case I say, “I’m done”; they will keep me going.
